Stage Play “A Fundamental Right to Choose” to Address Abortion Ban
A Fundamental Right to Choose
WORLD PREMIERE OF NEW STAGE PLAY TO ADDRESS NATIONWIDE ABORTION
BANS IN A COMPELLING & THOUGHT PROVOKING PRODUCTION
BURBANK, CA – 8/21/24 – In light of recent legislation heavily restricting access to abortion care across the country, The Taylor Studio, in Burbank, CA is set to house the World Premiere of a powerful new stage production: “A Fundamental Right to Choose.”
Written and directed by Jennifer Taylor, the production aims to shed light on the mass impact the reversal of Roe vs. Wade has had on the American public – with a heavy emphasis on the effect it’s had on women’s reproductive rights, their healthcare, and their everyday lives. Told through a series of connected vignettes, the play follows the stories of five different women, from five different states where abortion is now deemed illegal. Each of the women is faced with a dire need for abortion care, but are unable to obtain one due to the various challenges and obstacles presented by the legislation of their respective states. Audiences are taken on an emotional journey that explores the complexities
and nuances of choice, autonomy, and the fatal consequences of restrictive legislation.
“This play is a powerful and timely exploration of the consequences of abortion bans on both individuals and society as a whole,” said Jennifer Taylor. “Through the lens of these women’s experiences, we hope to provoke thought, spark conversation, and inspire action to protect reproductive rights for all.”
Featuring a talented cast of actors, including Delante Desouza of HBO’s Emmy Nominated series Winning Time & Eugenia Kuzmina of Universal’s Bad Moms, “A Fundamental Right to Choose” promises to engage and challenge audiences to consider the implications of constrained abortion laws. The production is a call to action for communities to stand up for women’s rights and advocate for access to safe and legal abortion.
Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this important and impactful play. Tickets are now available for performances running from Sept 13th to Oct 19th 2024 at Living-Truthfully Theatre at The Taylor Studio.

World Premiere of “TH IR DS” at the Zephyr
In an alternate timeline of American history in which the Civil War was never fought, America stands divided into three separate countries: The Union, The Confederate, and The Pacific States of America. When an historic drought threatens the citizens of the Confederate States, Catherine Shepard, the world’s most powerful water tycoon and citizen of the Pacific States, must travel into the Confederacy to negotiate a secret deal with the government to provide their people with clean water before it’s too late.
Playwright Ben Edlin explains, “TH IR DS is an exploration of the ties that bind us together and the forces that pull us apart: of the hope that lies in understanding when our bitterness departs. Of the dangers we may drown in when we all decline to say, ‘I’m not sure I agree, but still, our brotherhood should stay.’ It’s a story of survival and of reaping what we sow: of a question, that if where we are is where we want to go?”
Deborah Aquila (Story Creation) has a unique aptitude for weaving a narrative that transports spectators to these familiar lands of different epochs in TH IR DS. Nominated 18 times for the Artios Award by the CSA, and winning for the features “Red,” “My Week with Marilyn,” “CODA,” and “La La Land,” Aquila was awarded the CSA’S Hoyt Bowers Award for Career Achievement in 2020. In 2021, the Sundance Film Festival honored “CODA” with the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast. While studying at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Adler Conservatory, Deborah embraced script analysis and dramaturgy. Adler was insistent that actors understand the themes of the plays and the ‘big idea,’ being presented. Understanding and examining the nuance of a character’s backstory within the larger context of the narrative has always informed her approach to storytelling. Deborah’s independent casting director career began with Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies, and Videotape,” and Uli Edel’s “The Last Exit to Brooklyn,” before moving to Los Angeles to cast Frank Darabont’s “The Shawshank Redemption.” She is a proud member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, BAFTA, The Television Academy, and the Casting Society of America.
Ben Edlin (Playwright/Story) recently premiered his latest play, Conversations in Exile, an original adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters. The first film he wrote, “The Union,” won the “Audience Award” at the Hoboken International Film Festival, as well the “Best New Voice Award” at the Long Beach International Film Festival. As an actor, Ben’s TV credits include a recurring role on the Bad Boys spinoff series, L.A.’s Finest, NBC’s Chicago Med, and Department of One, opposite Ed Begley Jr. He has appeared in several short films, including “Two Days,” “Down & Out,” and the upcoming “Scott,” directed by George Sear. Other film credits include “Anywhere with You,” which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival. He can currently be seen in the lead role of “Mindwash” for the Arcane Company, streaming now on Amazon, and the soon to be released film “Riding Shotgun.”
Jessica Aquila Cymerman (Director) co-founded the theatre company Untold Wants, in Dublin (now world traveling), where she continues to direct and produce contemporary theatre. Selected Theatre directing credits include Hedda Gabler, Julie: After Strindberg (North American premiere), Gruesome Playground Injuries, Cock, The Human Ear (North American premiere), Reasons to be Pretty (all for Untold Wants Theatre), The Gift, Strange Relations (staged readings, IAMA Theatre, LA), Ted and the Right to Die (RCS, Glasgow), Il Cambiale di Matrimonio (Raucous Rossini, Glasgow), The Seagull: A Musical Adaptation (co-writer, Original Production, RCS), Urinetown The Musical; Reefer Madness! The Musical, and The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? (Sarah Lawrence College). Selected Film directing credits include the shorts “The Den,” in 2022, Winner “Best Director” Vesuvius Int’l film festival; Official selection: Seattle Film Festival, Austin FF, Sarasota FF, Tall Grass FF, Albuquerque FF, and many more), “The Stairs,” Winner “Humanitarian Award,” “Best Child Actor,” and “Best Costume Design” at the Idyllwild Film Festival, “Best Female Director” Stockholm Short Festival; Jury Award Nominee for Best Narrative Short at the Rome International FF; Official selection: Dances with Films, Poppy Jasper Int. FF, Garden State FF, Irish Film Fest, SOHO International FF, Albuquerque FF, Mallorca Evolution FF, Queens World FF, and Manhattan FF. She holds an MA in Directing from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, with training from Shakespeare’s Globe, UK. jessicaaquilacymerman.com
“TH IR DS is a reflection of a pervasive undercurrent in the United States right now,” says director Jessica Aquila Cymerman. “More than an alternative history exploration, this play is a deeply human examination. What makes us believe biased truths about each other? What drives our actions, passions, joy, rage? Which issues make us go to the polls? Which ones make us bury our heads in the sand? What is it about Americans that we can hate one another, yet address ourselves as one, on the global scale? This play conveys our greatest fears as a nation that is designed to be aligned; it speaks to the sentiments of an election year. Its relevance is timely, and its message universal. Are we not better together, supporting each other, sharing resources? Especially when humanity’s next hurdle will be the elements, now is the time to learn how to band together, united.”
OUR CAST: Derek Webster as Professor William Seward (bio); Tess Harrison as Patricia Todd (starred in “This Is A Film About My Mother” currently available on Amazon and Vudu and featured on the site, Girls In Film. “It’s Perfect Here,” was Tess’s award-winning debut short film, and other shorts include “Take Me Out with the Stars,” “Things Break In,” and Dog, programmed at over fifty festivals worldwide. Her music videos have generated over 14 million views); Éanna O’Dowd as Peter Todd (selected theatre: Hedda Gabler trans. Music Review: The Redline Syndicate
- Jeff: We all have a diverse collection of musical interests. I have mainly been influenced by some of the greats in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s. Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Bad Company, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden. I have always been receptive to good music no matter the genre. Chris Chalmers is my song writing partner. He also has a diverse catalog of influence, but I would say the country influence comes mainly from him.
- Jeff: The Redline Syndicate was started by Chris and I. We have been playing together for a number of years and we were in a harder more metal type band called Vial 8 and we both wanted to branch out to a little more accessible sound and venture into some of our deeper influences. I had known Dan Mullan (drums) from a previous band situation, so I got a hold of him and he was available and knew a bass player so we got together and right from the get go we clicked. We started writing songs and added Kent Nelson (guitar) whom I had known from a previous band. We wanted to add Keyboards and Dan’s wife Linda Mullan (keys, background vocals) was added and we were off to the races. Daryl Mead (bass) has been added recently to replace the original bass player. I knew Daryl from a previous band that I was in called Scatter Creek that Kent was also involved in.
- Jeff: My stage performance is influenced by Robert Plant, David Lee Roth, Paul Rodgers, David Coverdale etc. I have mixed their influences and then added my own personality to it.
- Jeff: The Redline Syndicate is really just getting started playing festivals and shows. Chris and I have done multiple shows opening for nationals such as Joan Jett, Godsmack, Tesla, Living Colour, Theory of a Deadman and many others. I’m hoping to branch out to national opening shows and possible travel with The Redline Syndicate, but it’s a slow process getting your foot in the door. I really think this band’s Music and performance capabilities will eventually enable us to get through some of those doors.
- Jeff: We all live in a few different towns so we don’t get to practice a lot but we try and practice a few times a month.
- Jeff: We have released 12 original songs on all of the digital platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, etc.
- Jeff: Primarily I write the lyrics and melodies, and Chris writes the music, then we bring it to the band and the other players add their own spin.
- Jeff: I rarely write with a specific theme, but I would say all of the lyrics stem from personal experience. The song “The Unknown” was specifically written about anxiety because I thought it was a theme that touches a lot of people.
- Jeff: The biggest obstacle is getting the exposure for larger markets to even consider letting you play. It’s a lot harder to get the word out in smaller markets via shows and word of mouth.
- Jeff: I saw a flyer on Facebook where the Whisky was asking for opening bands so I submitted our music and they let us on the bill.
- Jeff: I think the availability of social media makes it easier for bands to get their music out, but it is still hard to get noticed because of the volume of music on social media. I think the music industry has had a major shift since social media, but having a label for promotion is still something that is helpful for consideration to get shows or airplay on a broader scale.
- Jeff: What’s next for us is to continue to build our presence through shows, social media and keep writing good songs. We are very close to going back in to record another batch of 12 songs.
- Jeff: To access our music we are on all the digital platforms, Facebook, Instagram etc. If people go to www.redlinesyndicate.com there are links to all of that.
Musical Review: Reefer Madness, The Musical
The war on drugs, whether real or imaginary, is not a new concept in America. Reefer Madness, the original film, was premiered in 1936 as a cautionary tale. In 1937, the Marihuana Tax Act came into effect, leading to the criminalization of the drug. With this federal prohibition in mind, Reefer Madness, The Musical takes the audience back in time, presenting the use of cannabis not as a moral lesson, but as a parody of the general panic of the 1930s.
With a few tweaks here and there, the musical sticks pretty much to the original story. Jack (David T. Crane) and Mae (Nicole Parker) are pushing marijuana out of their home, marked with the number 420. Hanging out at their place is Ralph (Andre Joseph Aultmon), a college dropout hooked on weed. Another character in the house is Sally (Jane Papageorge), also addicted to marijuana. She ends up selling her kid while heavily stoned. Jimmy (Anthony Norman) and Mary (Darcy Rose Byrnes) are the lovebirds who also succumb to the Devil’s lettuce.
The choreography is energetic, including tap dancing and some disco moves during Jesus’ (Rory O’Malley) number, “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy”. The inclusion of Jesus and the Devil as the two moral opposites give the musical an edge and a satirical element to the core of the story.
The red lighting symbolizing the sexual awakening and the dangers of criminal activity conveys effectively the situation of the characters: Living in the fast lane; tragedy just around the corner. The innuendos of BDSM and the presence of the Devil make the musical numbers even more sinful and attractive.
In terms of text, the book by Kevin Murphy & Dan Studney is playful and gives the actors plenty of opportunities to shine through the delivery of their lines and the physical comedy involved in the action. The two characters showing the most important transformations are Mary and Jimmy, but it is Mary who changes more dramatically. From a naïve girl to the vixen sadist with a whip, she embodies the aggressive loss of inhibitions, all thanks to the use of marijuana. The text pays homage to Mae West as well. Sally delivers one of West’s most famous lines involving feet and inches, but backwards.
Director and choreographer Spencer Liff does a fantastic job utilizing the excellent elements at his disposal. He unifies the talent and creative components of this production to present a kinky, hilarious, and engaging performance. The limits of legality and the temptation of illegality contribute to create an alluring story that becomes timeless and reflects our complicated relationship with a humble plant that has been used by humans for thousands of years.
